Phil (Michael Sheen) and Alice (Tina Fey) are an unmarried but otherwise a perfectly happy couple living in New York with their young daughter, Emma. But when Emma enters elementary school, her curiosity about marriage grows. Why aren’t her parents married like the other children’s parents? Her curiosity is eventually heightened when she is asked by one of Alice’s co-workers to be a flower girl at her wedding. Emma’s needs for her parents to bond in holy matrimony become inevitable. Phil and Alice decide, for the sake of their daughter, to get married. After all, being married or not is not important as their love for one another, especially their love for Emma. As the wedding date approaches, Alice’s mother, Carol (Meryl Streep), arrives. Carol, a beautiful, radiant, and newly divorced stage actress, attracted the attention of Phil’s older brother, Colin (Colin Firth), who’s also in town for the wedding. Colin is a handsome charismatic Englishman. He loves women. But most of all, he loves sex. He sees Carol as his next venture and goes out of his way to pursue her. The two eventually began a short, hot fling, which both agree to end as soon as the wedding is over. However, they began to develop deep feelings for each other and when Phil and Alice accidentally find out about the affair, their own relationship is put to the test and their marriage may be in trouble before it’s even started.
